This scarf was inspired by the traditional technique of Phulkari (“flower work”: Hindi). It is a rich heritage of hand-embroidery practiced by rural women in the state of Punjab to make head-scarves, shawls and blankets. Traditionally, in this region, intricate shawls were made by the women in a family over many years, and given to their brides at the time of their marriage. In keeping with that tradition, this scarf was made in small batches in a women-owned factory, and each of the 30 thread tassels is individually hand-made by homemaking women of rural background, as a part of a project to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
